Rapper plagues Greater Manchester Police with 999 calls

http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/england/manchester/10386731.stm

A rapper is tying up police emergency lines by bombarding a force with nuisance calls. The police has already blocked more than 60 sim cards, since the man started doing this in January 2009. he made 700 calls in the past three months, which costs the force around £1,000 a month.Supt Karan Lee said his "inappropriate outbursts" are putting "lives at risk". So far officers have managed to establish that most of the calls are made from the Moss Side and Trafford areas. "We have to treat each call as if it was a real emergency, so it's frustrating and worrying when we get time wasters preventing people with real emergencies coming through." Some recordings of the calls has been released to public and the police desperately hopes someone recognizes his voice or that someone knows who is responsible for this.

I really do not understand why the man is doing this. It makes you wonder if he realises what kind of crime he is committing. He is not promoting his music this way if the thinks that. He used over 60 sim cards, so he keeps buying extra sim cards just for this matter. That makes me believe that he has some mental issues. I also find it strange to see that even in this modern times, people are still capable of bullying emergency lines with these kind of sick jokes. I really thought the police would have tracked you down in a matter of seconds.

Yorkshire hospital patients face tests in HIV scare

http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/england/10377839.stm

More than 500 hospital patients in Yorkshire are being offered HIV tests after it emerged a healthcare worker who treated them had the virus. It affects the Hull and East Yorkshire Hospitals Trust, Scarborough and North East Yorkshire Hospitals Trust and York Hospitals Foundation Trust. The letter also informed the people that the worker, who cannot be identified for legal reasons, was removed from duties where there was a risk of the infection being transmitted. The individual no longer works in a role where there is any risk of blood-to-blood contact, the trust said. He added: "Recalling patients for testing is purely a precautionary measure. The risk to patients is extremely low." Letters have been sent to 371 patients in Hull and East Yorkshire, 47 in Scarborough and North East Yorkshire and 101 in York.

I think the hospital did the right thing by removing the individual from duties where there is any risk of blood-to-blood contact. Offering all the patients who were treated by this person an HIV test is something that speaks for itself. The alternative is to keep it quiet but if it comes out, the hospitals would ruin their reputation and then they would also risk some severe penalties. It might be a shock to the patients that they will receive the tests, but how often does a doctor have blood-to-blood contact with his patient? I think almost never. If the doctor took the right precautions, like wearing gloves and a scrub, there should be no problems.

Boy detained for Facebook insult murder in London

http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/england/london/10372678.stm

A 16-year-old boy has been detained for killing a former best friend after the pair traded insults on Facebook. Salum Kombo, 18, was stabbed in the chest in Bromley-by-Bow, east London, in December after calling his killer, then 15, names including "pussy". The teenager, has been ordered to serve a minimum of 14 years. By murdering Mr Kombo, the teenager wanted to prove he wasn’t a “pussy”. Judge Nicholas Loraine-Smith said: "This was simply an act of cowardice, as so many stabbings are." David Jeremy, prosecuting, said a previous friendship between Mr Kombo and the defendant had turned to "hostility" and the pair had a fight last summer after a football match. The boy admitted the stabbing but claimed he had been acting in self-defence. An Old Bailey jury rejected his explanation and convicted him of murder in May.

I wasn’t really shocked by reading this. I am surfing on the internet a lot and there are so many people looking for digital fights, and trying to act tough on the internet. I used to play an online game, and people were insulting each other all the time. Sometimes they threatened each other by saying that they will come and look them up in real life. 99% of these threats were all bluff but in this case, the boys knew each other and one wasn’t bluffing. Salum Kombo wanted to deal with it by fighting but the teenager was even more pathetic by pulling out a knife. It is hard to check people’s behaviour on the web since it is so big, so I don’t expect this story to be an unique one, unfortunately.

Stiletto warning for pregnant women

http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/health/10309086.stm

Experts warn pregnant women of wearing the wrong type of shoes. A poll of 1,000 pregnant women for the Society of Chiropodists and Podiatrists found many regularly wore ballet pumps, flip flops, high heels and Ugg boots. Women are feeling pressured by celebrities to wear high heels during pregnancy. High heels alter your posture and shorten your calf muscles and places pressure on your back and knees. Muscles and ligaments soften and stretch because of an increase in the ovarian hormone relaxing. "In pregnancy this places extra pressure on your joints when they are already under strain - which can result in a host of foot, leg and back problems and could increase the likelihood of falls."

I think it is very important for women to wear the right type of shoes. Being pregnant puts your body under a lot more pressure than usual. This requires the right type of shoes to support your body throughout the day. I also think it is nonsense to risk your health because celebrities also wear high heels during pregnancy. As the article said, they only wear them occasionally. Specially at home, women should wear comfortable, wide-fitting shoes to prevent their ankles or feet of swelling up. It also prevents your back from hurting as it doesn’t experience any extra pressure. Your body will be needing all the strength it can have, while raising a child.

Cab rapist John Worboys in appeal to cut sentence

http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/england/london/10315859.stm

John Worboys, a 51 year old cab driver from Rotherhithe, London, went in appeal to cut his sentence. Worboys was jailed indefinitely in 2009 for drugging and sexually assaulting female passengers in his black cab. He used to drug them with champagne mixed with sedatives, to rape them afterwards. A pre-sentence report described Worboys as a "repetitive predatory sexual offender" who showed a "significant degree of sexual deviance". Following his conviction, police said he could be linked to 85 attacks in the London and Dorset areas dating back to 2002. His barrister, Jeremy Gold QC, said Worboys was an "inadequate individual" who was not diagnosed with any mental disorder but who struggled to have successful relationships with women. His appeal starts this Tuesday.

This man should be locked up for good. The way that he planned his attacks makes me sick. The fact that he could be linked to 85 attacks, should be enough to lock him away for good. This man is a serious threat to the English public and should not be out on the streets again. I also do not understand why he is still going in appeal if there are so many crimes he committed. Maybe there is a chance that he is found innocent of 10 of the 85 crimes but that still leaves a huge amount of crimes for which he should pay. This man deserves to spent the rest of his life in jail.

David Beckham visits British troops in Afghanistan

http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/uk_news/8697996.stm

Footballer David Beckham has spoken of his awe for British troops while making a visit to Afghanistan. He told BFBS British Forces News: "These guys are the bravest people that I've ever met and it really is, it truly is, an honor to be here."
He added: "I've been wanting to come for years, but with my playing schedule I've never had the time. But obviously being injured now it's given me the chance to do things I've always wanted to do and never been able to."
Asked if he would have considered a military career had he not become a footballer, Beckham said: "Without a doubt... I've represented my country many times on the field, but what these guys do representing our country is really amazing."

This is what I meant with my previous blog. Soldiers in Afghanistan deserve this kind of attention. What David Beckham did, means a lot to the soldiers. He is a very busy man but he managed to wait for a good moment to come and visit them. David Beckham is not the only celebrity who did this. For the soldiers in Afghanistan it is a clear sign that the people at home are supporting them and thinking about them. It gives them new hope and strength to get through the time they have to spend there. That might be the most important reason why I support David Beckham’s initiative.

UK marine killed in Afghan blast

http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/uk_news/8714185.stm

The marine from 40 Commando was killed in an explosion while on foot patrol near Sangin in Helmand Province during the evening of 30 May. The foot patrol was necessary to explore and understand the local area when he got struck by an explosion. Task Force Helmand spokesman Lt Col James Carr-Smith praised the marine's "bravery and selfless commitment". The number of UK soldiers killed if Afghanistan is now 289. This month, eight British service personnel have been killed. Four of them belonged to the Royal Marines.

It is not the first time I read about a soldiers who died in Afghanistan. Almost every week, I read something about it. The UK is very active in the war in Afghanistan, but none the less I was surprised to read the number of UK soldiers. I didn’t expect it to be that high. The newsflashes about these deaths are getting shorter every time there is a new fatality. I personally have nothing against the war, but I do think that soldiers who die should get more attention and a proper farewell. This newsflash does not pay enough attention to it.

Cameron's coalition: Mobile phones banned from cabinet

http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/uk_news/politics/8679648.stm

Members of David Cameron's new cabinet have been banned from having their mobile phones and Blackberrys with them during meetings. There was laughter in the room when Mr Cameron had to call Justice Secretary Ken Clarke to attention, when he was on the phone.
He said that holding meetings in different parts of the country was "a good thing, and I think we should try to continue that to recognise we're the government for the whole United Kingdom and they need to get out and see it". Use of mobile phones and other devices during meetings and debates in parliament used to be banned, but now politicians are allowed to have them, but they must be in silent mode.

I think that having your mobile phones on during such serious things, is a shame. When you have to debate about things that are crucial for a whole country, you must be focused all the time. It is not high school where you don’t like the lesson and you go and surf some on the web on your mobile phone. Crucial decisions have to be made and you need to concentrate on that. I think that David Cameron is absolutely right to ban mobile phones from his new cabinet. It also gives a clear sign to the public that he is really serious about the debates and his new position.

John Terry's father admits dealing cocaine

http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/uk_news/england/essex/8679692.stm

The father of the Chelsea and former England captain John Terry has pleaded guilty to dealing cocaine. Edward Terry, 56, supplied it to an undercover newspaper reporter in a winebar in Chafford Hundred, in 2009. Edward Terry is embarrassed because of the supset the incident caused to his son.
Edward Terry’s council, mr. Saunders said Terry had drunk a considerable amount that night.
Presiding magistrate John Toplis said the case was unusual and ruled that a Crown Court judge should pass sentence. Terry, did not comment when he left court and he only spoke to confirm his personal details and enter a guilty plea during the hearing.
He will be sentenced at Basildon Crown Court on 1 June and was released on bail.

The whole case is blown up because Edward Terry is the father of the famous John Terry. Everyday, drug dealers get arrested and convicted so the case itself is not a rare one. Only because it is the father of a famous football player, makes it such a big deal. I really feel sorry for John Terry, because of the negative attention he gets by this. He is a great man and a great football player and I think he should support his father and be patient because it will blow over again. I think the worst media hype is over now, and I hope they will be able to enjoy life as usual fast.

UK airports have reopened after volcanic ash risk

http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/uk_news/8663994.stm

All British airports are reopened again after the latest closures. People got stranded overnight but the ash cloud has moved west and has cleared UK airspace, air traffic control body Nats said. Ash clouds are ruining the airspace for the last month, causing airports to close temporarily. This latest disruption started last Monday and today all the left over airports are reopened again. The Irish Aviation Authority (IAA) said airports in the Irish Republic started to reopen at 0400 BST, with the final airport coming back into operation at 0900 BST. In a statement, Nats confirms that the ash cloud moved to the west and that they will keep maintain close dialogue with the Met Office and with the CAA, which is responsible for imposing no-fly zones.

I think it is quite amazing that something so simple like an ash cloud can disturb air traffic on this scale. For the people that need to travel for business or booked holidays, it is even more annoying. If the ash cloud stays in the west, it won’t be as annoying anymore. Airports will lose a lot of money if the ash cloud returns again, and that is something that countries can’t afford during the financial crisis. This whole situation shows once more that nature is still more powerful than men, since authorities can’t do any more than to close the airports and wait for the ash cloud to go away.
